Fabric Requirements

A pair of trousers takes about 1½ yards of 54-, 58- or 60-inch cloth — the width barely matters until you go narrower still. Order 1¾ yards for a standard size and you will have enough for the legs, waistband and turn-ups with normal seam allowances. Trousers are the clearest illustration of why cloth width matters more than size. The requirement barely moves across the whole size range — but drop the width far enough and it very nearly doubles.

These are standard sizes on default settings. Bespoke work rarely is — for your client’s actual measurements, your cloth’s repeat and your own style options, run it through the calculator, which also draws the cutting layout.

Why width matters more than size

A pair of trousers is four large pieces — two fronts, two backs — plus a waistband. On 60-inch cloth all four legs fit side by side across the width in a single length. The waistband then tucks into the leftover strip.

Take enough width away and the fourth leg no longer fits. It moves onto a second length, and the requirement jumps by most of a yard in one step rather than creeping up. That is why a chart that gives one number for "trousers" without naming a width is not much use, and why the same pair can take 1.4 yards or 2.6 depending entirely on the cloth you picked.

Cutters get four legs across by laying them head to toe, so the wide seat of one sits beside the narrow lower leg of its neighbour. That nesting is what makes the tight fit possible — and it is the first thing you lose on directional cloth.

Nap and one-way cloth

Velvet, corduroy, moleskin, brushed flannel and any directional design must be cut with every piece the same way up, or the panels will shade differently once made up. That rules out nesting tapered pieces head to toe, which is how a cutter normally saves width.

This is the single biggest variable for trousers. On a 44R, losing the ability to nest adds about 1.2 yards — very nearly doubling the order. If you are cutting corduroy, moleskin or velvet, set the one-way option in the calculator before you order.

Pleats widen the trouser fronts but often cost nothing, because the extra width is absorbed by cloth already in the order. Occasionally they push a leg past the edge and cost a full length — the calculator will tell you which.

Pocketing

Allow about 0.9 yards of pocketing or lining for pocket bags and, if you want them, a half lining to the knee. Trousers need no canvas.

How these figures were worked out

The panel widths behind these numbers were cross-checked against Winifred Aldrich's Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear and Alan Poulin's Tailoring Suits the Professional Way, then laid out piece by piece across the chosen cloth width to see how many lengths the layout actually needs.

They are estimates and should be treated as such — seam allowances, house style and a cutter's own habits all move the number. What they will not do is guess: every figure here comes from an actual arrangement of actual pattern pieces.
