A Note From Us
Thank You

Cloth & Chalk started as a tool for one custom clothier's own workshop, and it's been amazing to see it grow into something real professionals are actually using every day. Thank you for every message, bug report, and feature request, we make sure to read all of it. We're continuing to build on both the website and the app, non-stop, and your feedback is exactly what's shaping where it goes next.

Cloth & Chalk
Fabric Calculator · 58″ Wide
The Mission.

This calculator estimates the fabric you need based on your measurements, body or finished, so you can order with confidence: no waste, no shortfall. Estimates account for piece layout across your fabric width. Results will always vary slightly by tailor, seam allowances, and working method, but we get you as close as possible.

We've since built this into a full tailor's toolkit with client profiles, order history, and more. Now live on the App Store. (Google Play launch is in the works.)

Pattern Layout
How pieces fit on 58″ wide cloth

This layout is a representative diagram. Piece shapes and proportions are derived from your measurements and aim to be as accurate as possible, but should not be used as cutting patterns. Yardage estimates are a guide only. Actual requirements vary by fabric width, pattern repeat, seam allowances, and the working practices of individual tailors and manufacturers. Always confirm yardage with your tailor before ordering fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much fabric do I need for a two-piece suit? +

A two-piece suit (coat and trousers) typically runs 3 to 4 yards at 58 to 60 inch width, but your exact number depends on chest, waist, and height, plus the width of the fabric you're using. Enter your own measurements above for a precise figure rather than relying on an average.

What garments can I calculate yardage/meterage for? +

Two-piece and three-piece suits, sport coats, slacks, waistcoats, and dress shirts, calculated individually or as a full outfit.

What fabric width should I enter? +

Most suiting and jacketing runs 58 to 60 inches (150cm); trouser-weight fabric is often 56 to 60 inches; shirting is typically 44 to 45 inches. Check the bolt label or ask your supplier if you're not sure, because width has a real effect on the final number, since the calculator lays pattern pieces out across whatever width you choose.

Is Cloth & Chalk free to use? +

Yes, the calculator is completely free, no account or payment required.

How accurate are the yardage/meterage estimates? +

Estimates are built from standard cutting layouts per garment, with seam allowances and ease already factored in, and accurate enough to order fabric against. Actual requirements can still shift slightly with your tailor's cutting method, pattern matching, or design details like pleats, so when in doubt, confirm with them before you buy.
